Kennedy knocks off St. Margaret’s in thrilling Division 3 semifinal – Orange County Register

The Kennedy boys volleyball team was three points away from being swept in three sets by St. Margaret’s in a CIF-SS Division 4 semifinal Wednesday at Kennedy High.

The Fighting Irish came back to win the third set and then proceeded to also win the next two to pull off a comeback victory, 23-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-23, 15-9, that put them in the championship final on Saturday.

The finals berth is the first for any Kennedy team since the school’s football team won a CIF-SS title in 2006, volleyball coach Travis Warner confirmed.

“The heart of this team is unbelievable,” Warner said. “All year long we’ve been preaching it doesn’t matter who does it, as long as somebody does it.”

Several players contributed to the victory for the Fighting Irish (24-6), particularly Daniel Song and Ellisara Sala, who had 15 kills each, and setter Spencer Hirai, who had 42 assists.

After coming back in the third set to stay alive, the Fighting Irish came back from a 9-2 deficit in the fourth set to force a final set.
