Adult soccer leagues offer options for players of all skill levels.

FOR THE PAST 20 years, Clare Megathlin has played soccer every week, heading outdoors to a soccer field with the same core players she’s competed with from the beginning.

“It’s just really fun,” she says. “It doesn’t feel like the same hard work as exercise; it feels like going out and playing.”

Megathlin, 48, grew up playing soccer, and played in high school and for a couple of years in college. When friends asked whether she wanted to join a team in Seattle, she thought it sounded like a fun way to stay active.

She has played on recreational teams, and ones that are more competitive. In one of the more-competitive divisions, everyone had high-school soccer experience, and some, like her, had also played in college. She now sticks with one game a week in a midlevel recreational division.

Megathlin says that unlike some other sports, she doesn’t have to train to be good at soccer; she can show up and play.

But what about people, like me, who didn’t play at all growing up? Megathlin says she has met plenty of players who learned as adults. Leagues also offer skills clinics.

The Seattle region offers a few leagues, with indoor and outdoor ones running year-round. League fees give you access to field time and referees, and teams to compete against.

Seattle Recreational Adult Team Soccer (RATS) also has regular, free skills workshops on weekends, which are helpful for rusty players or for newcomers learning soccer essentials. Workshops also are good places to meet other players and find a team. Seattle…
