New devices aim to improve safety on the water – Business – The Lake News Online

Now, a Lake St. Louis husband and wife have invented a product for recreational boating safety to improve the visibility of people in towable water sports such as water skiing, tubing, wakeboarding, etc. The product is called DownAlert PSD — Personal Signaling Device.

First, it was Dock Alert, a safety warning device developed locally in the aftermath of several electric-shock drownings at the Lake of the Ozark in recent years.

Now, a Lake St. Louis husband and wife have invented a product for recreational boating safety to improve the visibility of people in towable water sports such as water skiing, tubing, wakeboarding, etc. The product is called DownAlert PSD — Personal Signaling Device.

“There has been a lot of interest in this product by leaders of the recreational boating safety community, noted Denise Pitlyk, owner/manager of DownAlert PSD, LLC. “I have discussed the product with the Missouri Water Patrol Division and the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and although they cannot and will not endorse a product, they did see the value in increasing visibility and safety.”

Pitlyk and her husband have been recreational boaters for many years, and have children who grew up at the Lake of the Ozarks.

“We were often very concerned about our safety and the safety of our loved ones while on this increasingly busy lake,” she said. “As a parent, grandparent, or captain of the ship, the greatest concern we had while pulling a water sports participant was what could happen to our loved one while left in the busy water alone and unaided, waiting for the boat to come back to them.”

DownAlert PSD is believed to be the first highly visible safety device for signaling boaters that a potential hazard — a person — is in the water, according to Pitlyk. The device — a bright orange and yellow sleeve — is easily adaptable to any age or size of skier, tuber, wakeboarder, etc., and comes in four sizes.

The device is worn on the arm of a water sports participant and includes an attached signal flag, which is deployed from the device and manually waved by the participant when down in the water. It’s as simple as Pull, Slide, Alert, Tuck.

DownAlert PSD is patent pending and is manufactured in Missouri.

FloatnThang

Another new water product hitting the market is FloatnThang. The multi-use floatation device was a hit at the Lake Havasu Boat Show in Arizona this year.

“We had an unbelievable first day of sales. We had people hovering around our booth. We were really excited to kick off the boating season by giving people a better way to relax on the water,” said product inventor Doug Masi.

Equipped with two cup holders, the device can be used in conjunction with a paddleboard for relaxed floating, or it can be used alone as a comfortable flotation device when you’re coving out. It can also be used as a booster seat…
