The linguistics behind ‘Arrival’

PERRYSBURG — Way Public Library welcomes Dr. Sheri Wells-Jensen, associate professor at Bowling Green State University, on June 6 at 7 p.m., for a presentation on field linguistics and the accuracy of language learning in the Oscar-winning film “Arrival.” What did the movie get right? Where did it fall short?

Wells-Jensen is in the Department of English and her research interests include xenolinguistics, phonetics, Braille, language preservation, TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages), language creation and disability studies. She also coordinates BGSU’s graduate certificate in TESOL and teaches courses in general linguistics, applied phonology and applied syntax. She is currently consulting with Scholastic Books on the creation of a language for a children’s book series.
